Check your cycling gear. Before you even set out, it is vital to make sure that your bike is suitable and safe. This is particularly vital for old bikes.
Air -- are your bike wheels inflated sufficiently?
Footbrakes - do they function properly, are they spotless?
Chain - is it spotless, free of fragments, and able to go with no hitches?
Look at the brakes. Wheel your bike round a level surface, dragging the brake levers on and off. If they do not function, and you're not certain how to repair them, contact your home-grown bike workshop and request them to aid you.
Look at the bike's tires. Put the entire tire into a small dish of water. See if there are any foams coming out. If there is any foam, it means your tire is pierced and you can get it repaired by a bike workshop or do it yourself. Do the same for the other tire.
See if the bike is the correct tallness for you. This is very easy as all you need to do is sit on your bike and make sure that the bottom of your toes traces the ground (and nothing else). Alter the bike seat as desired and the handgrips as well.
